Rittersburg Castle (Flums)

The "Ritterburg" (Knight's Castle) was built in 1574 by Christoffel Tschudi, the Lord of Gräplang, as a widow's residence for his childless wife Amalia Nussbaum. An early photographic view of the square (Dr. Schmon) shows, however, that this Ritterburg originally had much more formidable forms, as the windows, unevenly distributed according to Gothic principles, sat as small holes in the massive surface of the solid square front. The later enlargement of the windows significantly impaired this original effect.

Nevertheless, the stepped gable of the mighty gabled roof still gives an idea of the formidable nature of this Tschudi widow's residence, with the construction of which the Lord of Gräplang sought to protect his wife from the hardships of the world beyond his death. In the wooden, simply ornamented carved cladding of the windows above the masonry of the two side views, the year of the building's construction is carved: 1574.
The interior of the Ritterburg underwent various structural changes over the centuries. Above the living room door on the first floor, Anna Maria Tschudi immortalized herself as the first renovator of the house's interior, followed in 1893 and 1931 by later owners with even more extensive changes. Nevertheless, the window posts and window seats still convey the impression of the old coziness of the rooms, and in the attic rest the old wall coverings with Renaissance profiles and simple carvings as witnesses of the former furnishings, which had to give way to a more practical new arrangement in the stairwell and living rooms.
