In Groß-Umstadt in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, Hesse, is Rodensteiner Castle, also known as Rodensteiner Hof. It is one of the city's formerly seven noble residences and is located at the northern corner of the old town, where it once formed the western end of the northern city wall.

History+

The first documented mention of Rodensteiner Castle dates back to 1409, when Count Palatine Ruprecht III granted the feudal court to Sibolt Schelm von Bergen. The Schelm von Bergen family had already served as bailiffs for the Electoral Palatinate since the 13th century. In 1454, the property was divided into a front and rear house for the brothers Hans and Eberhart Schelm von Bergen. An expansion of the castle, including the still-preserved hexagonal stair tower with a stone spiral staircase, took place in 1465 under Karl Schelm von Bergen.
