The Roman Bridge of Saint-Thibéry, once part of the historic Via Domitia, spanned the Hérault River. It is notable for its unusually flat segmental arches.

History+

The structure, dated to the reign of Augustus (30 BC – 14 AD), was a segmental arch bridge with nine arches. These had spans ranging from 10 to 12 meters. The roadway was supported by wide piers, which were equipped with arched flood channels and massive breakwaters to protect against floods and scour. The estimated total length of the bridge was approximately 150 meters, with a road width of 4 meters.
