Roman Palastaula Augusta Treverorum (Konstantinbasilika) (Treves)
In Trier, the Roman Palace Aula, also known as the Basilica of Constantine, houses the largest single room preserved from antiquity.
History+
The Palace Aula was constructed at the beginning of the 4th century and served as Emperor Constantine's throne room. Originally, the interior was clad in marble, statues adorned the niches, and a hypocaust system provided heating for the floor and walls. In the Middle Ages, the building was integrated into the archiepiscopal-electoral residence, with the apse converted into a residential tower and the walls crenellated. In the early 17th century, parts of the basilica were dismantled for the construction of the Electoral Palace.
