Roman Village Nigrum Pullum

Nigrum Pullum was founded in 47 AD as a small castellum on the Old Rhine, which then formed the northern border of the Roman Empire. The fort housed a garrison of about 300 Roman volunteers. In 69 AD, the settlement was destroyed during the Batavian Revolt, but was rebuilt as a wooden fort around 80 AD. In the mid-2nd century, specifically 175 AD, a stone castellum was erected on the same site. About 100 years later, around 275 AD, the camp was finally abandoned and destroyed by fire and by the Romans themselves. East and south of the castellum was a civilian settlement connected to the fort by a gravel road. Extensive excavations between 1968 and 1974 provided valuable insights into the complex, particularly about the later construction phases after 80 AD. Six Roman river boats were also discovered, including fishing boats and military transport vessels.

The Roman settlement of Nigrum Pullum is located in Zwammerdam, a town in the province of Zuid-Holland in West-Nederland, Netherlands. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 6 m above sea level.

The remains of the Roman settlement can be visited today, offering an insight into the Roman past of the region.
