Roman City Aquincum

Around the time of Christ's birth, the Romans conquered the area of modern-day Hungary, then inhabited by the Celtic Eravisci tribe. From 40 AD onwards, the Romans established a military camp here. In 89 AD, a legion was stationed, and significant civilian settlements developed around the camps. Aquincum was designated the capital of the province of Pannonia inferior around 106 AD. The later emperor Hadrian served as governor in Aquincum in 107 AD, and a governor's palace was built. The civilian settlement to the north received city rights as a Municipium in 124 AD and was equipped with walls, public baths, and other buildings. Later, two amphitheatres were constructed, one for the civilian city and one for the military. In 194 AD, the civilian city was elevated to the status of a colony. Although Aquincum lost its provincial capital status in 296 AD, it retained its importance. Around 332 AD, a new legionary camp was built, and about 30 years later, a Christian double basilica was constructed in the civilian city. From the late fourth century, Germanic and Hunnish-Alanic immigrants settled in the area. Shortly after 430 AD, the Romans officially abandoned Pannonia, but a Roman residual population remained traceable.
