Roman City Aquincum

The Romans conquered the area of modern-day Hungary around the time of Christ, with the region of later Budapest inhabited by the Celtic Eravisci tribe. From 40 AD, the Romans established a military camp. In 89 AD, a legion was transferred here, and significant civilian settlements developed around the camps. Aquincum became the capital of the newly established province of Pannonia inferior around 106 AD. The later Emperor Hadrian served as governor in 107 AD and had a palace built. The civilian town located north of the camp received city rights as a Municipium in 124 AD and was equipped with walls, public baths, and other buildings. Two amphitheatres were constructed, one for the civilian town and one for the military camp. In 194 AD, the civilian town was elevated to the status of a Colonia. Although Aquincum lost its status as a provincial capital in 296 AD, it remained of particular importance. Around 332 AD, a new legionary fortress was built, and about 30 years later, a Christian double basilica was erected. From the late fourth century onwards, Germanic, Hunnish, and Alanic immigrants increasingly settled in the area. Shortly after 430 AD, the Romans officially abandoned Pannonia, but a Romanized population remained traceable.

The remains of the Roman city of Aquincum are located in Budapest, specifically in the Budapest district in the Közép-Magyarország (Central Hungary) region of Hungary. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 108 m above sea level.
