Roman City Aquincum-Amphitheatre

The Roman city of Aquincum, where the amphitheater is situated, was an important settlement on the Danuvius (Danube), which once formed the border of the Roman Empire. After the conquest of present-day Hungary around the birth of Christ by the Romans, the area, previously inhabited by Celtic Eravisci, was brought entirely under Roman control from 40 AD. Initially, a military camp was established, reinforced by a legion in 89. Civilian settlements developed around these camps. In 106, Aquincum became the capital of the newly established province of Pannonia Inferior. Under the later Emperor Hadrian, who became governor in 107, the city flourished. In 124, a settlement center located north of the camp was granted city rights as a Municipium. In the following years, two amphitheaters were built, one for the civilian city and another for the military camp. The civilian city was elevated to a colony in 194. Although Aquincum lost its status as a provincial capital in 296, it retained its importance. After 430, Pannonia was officially ceded to the Huns, but a Romanized population persisted.

The remains of the Roman City Aquincum Amphitheater are located in present-day Budapest, in the Közép-Magyarország (Central Hungary) region, Hungary, at an elevation of approximately 104 m above sea level.
