Roman City Aventicum-Amphitheatre
The Amphitheater of the Roman city of Aventicum, an impressive testament to ancient architecture, stands in Avenches in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. As part of the former capital of the Helvetii, it was a central venue for public spectacles and a prominent example of Roman architecture in the region.
History+
The amphitheater was built at the end of the 1st century on the eastern slope of the Avenches hill. At the beginning of the 2nd century, it underwent an expansion that increased its capacity to 14,000 to 16,000 spectators. The main entrance in the east featured a monumental facade with three arches. This structure was an essential part of the Roman city of Aventicum, which in its heyday from the 1st to 3rd century AD was the largest urban center on Swiss soil.
