Roman City Aventicum-Theatre

The Roman city of Aventicum, whose origins trace back to a Helvetian oppidum, developed into an important center after the birth of Christ. Under Emperor Vespasian, who elevated Aventicum to a colony around 70 AD, the city experienced its golden age. During this period, which lasted until the 3rd century, extensive construction activity was recorded. Among numerous representative buildings, the Roman Theater was also erected, boasting considerable capacity for its time. The city's decline began with the Alamannic invasions in the 3rd and 4th centuries, after which residents sought refuge on a nearby hill. The remains of Aventicum subsequently served as a quarry until the rediscovery of the ancient site began in the 16th century, and initial excavations were carried out.

The Roman Theater is located in Avenches, a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 448 m above sea level.
