Roman City Aventicum-Therme
In Avenches, in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, are the Roman City Aventicum-Thermae, ancient bath complexes of Roman Aventicum, once the capital of the Helvetii.
History+
During its heyday from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, Aventicum was the largest city on Swiss soil and an important political, religious, and economic center. The thermae were an integral part of Roman life. Following the decline of Roman rule and the invasions by the Alamanni in the 3rd and 4th centuries, the city lost its importance, and its structures fell into disrepair or were used as quarries.
