The Roman City Aventicum Gate is a remnant of the ancient Roman city of Aventicum, which once served as the political, religious, and economic center of the Helvetii. Located in Avenches, in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 479 meters above sea level, it bears witness to the former grandeur and significance of this Roman metropolis.

History+

Aventicum, situated on the southern edge of the Broye Plain, was founded after the birth of Christ and quickly grew into an important hub. Under Emperor Vespasian, who presumably spent part of his youth there, Aventicum was elevated to the status of a Roman colony. The city was fortified with an impressive ring wall and numerous towers, stretching 5.2 kilometers and featuring two main gates. During its heyday in the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, Aventicum boasted over 20,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city on Swiss soil. With the Alamannic invasions in the 3rd and 4th centuries, its decline began, and the city was largely destroyed. Its remains later served as a quarry until the rediscovery of the ancient site commenced in the 16th century.
