The roman town can be visited

The Roman city of Carnuntum, once the capital of the province of Upper Pannonia, is situated on the southern bank of the Danube. This ancient site, now located in the municipality of Petronell-Carnuntum, was strategically positioned on the Amber Road where it crossed the Danube.

History+

Carnuntum was first mentioned in 6 AD under Emperor Augustus, when a Roman army established a winter camp here. Around 40/50 AD, the legionary fortress of Legio XV Apollinaris was established, around which an extensive camp town developed. Later, in the late 1st century AD, another military camp for a cavalry unit was built to the southwest, and a civilian city grew in parallel. This was elevated to a municipium under Emperor Hadrian and to a colonia under Septimius Severus. Carnuntum was the seat of the governor at the latest under Emperor Trajan. In the 2nd century, the city grew steadily, and even the Marcomannic Wars could not halt its development. Emperor Marcus Aurelius stayed here for three years and wrote parts of his Meditations.
