The roman town can be visited

The Roman city of Carnuntum once served as a military camp and later as the capital of the Roman province of Upper Pannonia. It was located on the southern bank of the Danube in what is now Petronell-Carnuntum, Lower Austria, at a point where the Amber Road crossed the Danube.

History+

The first written mentions of Carnuntum date back to 6 AD, when Tiberius established a winter camp for his troops here. Around 40/50 AD, Legio XV Apollinaris was stationed, leading to the development of an extensive camp city. Later, a civilian city emerged, which gained the status of a municipium under Emperor Hadrian and was elevated to a colonia under Septimius Severus. Carnuntum was the scene of historical events, including Emperor Marcus Aurelius' three-year stay and the proclamation of Septimius Severus as emperor in 193.
