The Roman city of Iscalis, whose exact ancient name is not definitively known, is located in the modern county of Somerset in the United Kingdom. It was a center for lead mining and processing in the Roman province of Britannia.

History+

The origins of the settlement date back to prehistoric times, when lead and silver were already mined here. Under Roman rule, the site developed into a city, which became part of the newly established province of Britannia Prima in the 4th century. Extensive earthworks, covering an area of about twelve hectares, indicate dense construction and intensive industrial use.
