The remains of the roman town can be visited

The ancient Roman town of Isurium Brigantum is located in modern-day Aldborough, North Yorkshire, England. It once served as the administrative center for the Brigantes.

History+

The exact origins of Isurium Brigantum are not fully understood, but evidence suggests a military camp was established in the second half of the 1st century AD, on the site of an existing village with stone structures. Under Emperor Hadrian, the official town was founded. Covering an area of approximately 22.3 hectares, the town was laid out with a grid of right-angled streets and, at a later date, acquired a town wall, likely with four gates, which was renovated in the 4th century. Due to subsequent construction, details of the original buildings are scarce.
