Roman City Nemausus-Castellum

In the southern French city of Nîmes, ancient Nemausus, one can find the remains of a Roman Castellum. This structure was once part of the infrastructure that the Romans built in this Gallo-Roman metropolis.

Nîmes, originally known as Celtic Nemausos and the main settlement of the Volcae Arecomici in the Provincia Narbonensis, was incorporated into the province of Gallia Narbonensis by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The city developed into a center of Gallo-Roman culture, strategically located on the Via Domitia. With approximately 25,000 inhabitants and its own mint, Nemausus was a Roman settlement.
