The origins of Nîmes date back to Celtic times, when the site was known as Nemausos, meaning “sanctuary” or “temple,” and served as the capital of the Volcae Arecomici in the Provincia Narbonensis. In the 1st century BC, the city was incorporated by the Romans into their province of Gallia Narbonensis and experienced a period of prosperity.
