In the French city of Vienne stands the Temple of Augustus and Livia. This podium temple, with its T-shaped cella surrounded by an open colonnade, is among the best-preserved Roman temple complexes.

History+

The temple was originally dedicated to Jupiter, Augustus, and his wife Livia. Livia was deified posthumously under Emperor Claudius. Its good preservation is due to its conversion into a church during the Middle Ages. Southeast of the temple lies the Parc Archéologique, which houses further remnants of the former forum. There, the foundations of a Cybele sanctuary were uncovered, complete with priests' residences and a small cult theater.
