Roman City Vienna-Theater

The remains of the roman Arena can be visited

The Roman Theater in the French city of Vienne, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, was once the largest of its kind in all of Gaul.

History+

The theater was likely constructed during the reign of Emperor Augustus: with a diameter of 130 meters, it offered space for approximately 13,000 spectators across 46 rows of seats. In the mid-3rd century AD, the structure suffered damage during the Germanic migrations and was later used as a quarry in the Middle Ages. Partial restoration began at the start of the 20th century, and the first open-air performances took place here in 1938, continuing regularly in the summer months to this day.
