Viroconium Cornoviorum, often simply referred to as Viroconium, was a Roman city in Britannia and served as the main settlement of the Civitas Cornoviorum. The ancient site, which is partially excavated and has not been built over.

History+

Around 45 AD, a cohort camp for Thracian troops was established south of the later city. Around 60 AD, a legionary fortress was built on the site of the future city, initially housing Legio XIIII Gemina and later Legio XX Valeria Victrix. After the legions departed at the end of the first century, the site developed into a civilian town. Around 120 AD, the settlement underwent expansion and adopted a grid-like street plan. To the west, there was a forum with a large, colonnaded square and a 52-meter-long basilica, which burned down between 165 and 185 AD but was rebuilt.
