Roman Villa Brombach

The origins of the Villa Rustica date back to the 2nd century AD, when the estate was built. In the late 1970s, specifically in 1979, Gerhard Billmann and Hermann Ziereisen discovered the first foundations. Following an archaeological assessment by Erhard Richter, the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation approved further excavations, which began in 1981 and continued until 1983. The city of Lörrach acquired the site, which spanned several properties, to facilitate the excavations and protect the site. In addition to the uncovered foundations, fire-preserved food supplies and remnants of agricultural tools and hunting weapons were also found. The destruction of the estate in the 3rd century AD is attributed to a fire, which coincided with the invasion of the Alamanni; no reconstruction followed thereafter.
