Roman Villa Freithofholz

The Roman villa rustica from the end of the the 1st century existed until the 4th century and was investigated, excavated and conserved starting in 1950/51.

The Roman villa rustica was a typical agricultural estate of the Roman Empire. It served not only as a residence for the owner but also as a center for agricultural production.

During the excavations, numerous artifacts were found that provide insights into the daily life of the inhabitants. These include pottery, tools, and coins.

The villa consisted of several buildings, including a main house, farm buildings, and a bathhouse. The main house was luxuriously furnished and had several rooms, some with underfloor heating (hypocaust).

The farm buildings were used for storing crops and housing livestock. The bathhouse offered the inhabitants the comfort of Roman bathing culture.

The Roman villa rustica is an important archaeological site that provides valuable information about Roman settlement history in the region. It shows how Roman culture and economy influenced the local population.

Today, the site is accessible to visitors and offers a unique opportunity to experience Roman history up close. Information boards and reconstructed elements help to visualize the former appearance of the villa.

Conservation and Future

The conservation of the Roman villa rustica is an ongoing task. Measures are continuously being taken to protect the ancient remains from decay and to preserve them for future generations.
