Roman Villa Mundelsheim

This Roman Villa Rustica from the 2nd century AD is located on a hill above the Neckar valley with a wide panoramic view. The foundations have been destroyed by agricultural use.

A large cellar with wall niches and remains of painting is well preserved. During excavation, a completely preserved bronze casserole, a coin minted by Emperor Constantine the Great in 324 AD, and fragments of a millefiori bowl made of green and gold glass were found on the cellar floor.

As early as 1929, parts of the estate were archaeologically investigated by Oskar Paret. He only partially excavated the now restored cellar of the manor house, while another room with a cellar was fully investigated. It was not until 1988 that the second cellar was thoroughly examined. Further buildings discovered included a cistern and the Mithraeum. Two wells and a channel heating system were also identified. The total size of the estate is not known. The cellar itself was plastered white, similar to buildings on the Limes, and the joints were traced in red. The star-shaped stones, above the niches, were alternately painted red, yellow, and green. Finds include, in addition to Terra Sigillata shards, a bronze casserole and fragments of a decorated glass plate. The bathhouse has not yet been found. Traces of fire show that the estate was destroyed by a fire.
