Roman Villa Oberlunkhofen

The Villa Rustica of Oberlunkhofen refers to the remains of a Roman estate in Schalchmatthau near the village of Oberlunkhofen in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland.

The remains had been known for a long time and were interpreted as the ruins of a castle. Systematic excavations took place from 1897 to 1900. From 1979 to 1981, the bathhouse wing was conserved. The hitherto known remains of the complex consist of the manor house and two outbuildings. The manor house stands on a terrace with a view of the Reuss Valley and the Alps. The manor house had a portico with two corner risalits to the south. In the eastern part of the house, a bath was installed in a later construction phase. Seven rooms had simple white-ground wall paintings. Coins and ceramics indicate that the villa was inhabited from approximately 50 to 250 AD. The most important small find is the torso of a statue of Bacchus.
