The roman Villa Rustica can be visited

The Villa Rustica Burgweinting is the name of a Roman estate (Villa rustica) near Burgweinting-Harting, a district of Regensburg, in Bavaria. The discovered remains of the Villa rustica are dated to the third and fourth centuries AD.

As early as 1830, Roman antiquities were unearthed at the site. However, the first excavations did not take place until 1911 to 1912, and then again in 1915 and 1916.

The villa complex is surrounded by a wall approximately 400 meters long, forming an irregular rectangle. There was a gate in the south. Within the walled area, nine buildings could be excavated, though they were certainly not all in use simultaneously; two further structures are visible from aerial photographs. In the north stood the actual villa, which included, among other things, two rooms with hypocausts and another room with a cellar. In the south, there were further buildings that apparently served primarily economic purposes. Paving could be observed in several places within the courtyard.

A pit containing tableware (Terra Sigillata) from the first century was found in the villa. Northwest of the villa, there is a small cemetery from the beginning of the second century. These findings suggest an earlier structure, while the pottery in the actual villa indicates a period of use from the third to the fourth century. However, the findings may also belong to two other nearby villas. A special find was a clay roof finial in the shape of a two-story round tower.

Bone finds in the villa's well indicate Alemannic raids in the 3rd century. The fractured skulls of the presumably Roman estate family had been partially scalped.

The layout of the villa is now visible on the surface through planting.
