Roman Villa Rustica Laufenburg

High above the High Rhine lies the Villa Rustica of Laufenburg. It existed at least from the middle of the 1st century AD until the 3rd century and belongs to the catchment area of Augusta Raurica. Close connections also existed to the legionary camp of Windisch. For example, bricks with stamps of the legions stationed there (XXI and XI) were found, which perhaps indicate that the villa was temporarily owned by a high-ranking officer of this camp or similarly high-ranking personalities who could claim military services. Three construction phases can be distinguished. From the fragment of a mosaic inscription that mentions a cliens, it can be seen that the villa was leased for at least some time. The reconstructed foundation walls are now freely accessible in a small open-air museum.
