Roman Villa Rustica Messkirch

The Villa Rustica can be visited

West of the small town of Messkirch in the Sigmaringen district, the Roman Villa Rustica Messkirch, a former Roman estate, represents the largest known Roman country estate in Southwest Germany. The complex has an area of almost eight hectares.

History+

The first exploration of the settlement took place between 1834 and 1836 by Pastor Joseph Anton Eitenbenz, who initially interpreted the findings as a Roman fortress. Later, in 1882, J. Näher carried out more extensive archaeological excavations on behalf of the Prince of Fürstenberg, which clearly identified the area as a Villa Rustica.
