Roman Villa Wiesenbach

The discovery of the Villa Rustica occurred in 1970, following the accidental find of a Roman well box the year before. Between 1972 and 1974, initial archaeological investigations were carried out under Berndmark Heukemes, focusing on the main building and the enclosure walls. After these excavations, the walls of the main building were conserved and the well was reconstructed. Further scientific excavations in 1978, 1980, and 1981 shed light on the enclosure walls and an outbuilding. A comprehensive survey of the site took place in 1994. The villa was likely built around 130 AD and abandoned around 259/260 AD during the Alamannic invasions. The complex comprises at least two construction phases, with a large central hall and a cellar, as well as several outbuildings and an enclosure wall measuring approximately 110/120 by 88 meters.
