Roman Apollo-Grannus-Temple Phoebiana (PANIONEI)

The temple was founded in 212 AD by Emperor Caracalla to thank the god Apollo Grannus for his healing. The temple's name combines the Roman god of healing, Apollo, with the Celtic spring and bathing god Grannus. The clear spring water in Phoebiana, the Roman name for Faimingen, significantly contributed to the site's supra-regional importance for cultic baths and drinking cures. Initial excavations began in 1888 by local teacher Magnus Scheller, uncovering the temple and adjacent buildings. A partial reconstruction was made possible by finds of worked stones and spolia in the 1970s. Milestones found in 1981 and 2002 confirmed the names Phoebiana and Apollo-Grannus and documented Caracalla's endowment of roads and bridges in 212/213.
