Roman Castle Bacharnsdorf

The Roman Burgus Bacharnsdorf is a component of the former Roman Limes along the Danube in Austria. The remains of this Valentinian fortification are in the Lower Austrian landscape.

The origins of Burgus Bacharnsdorf date back to the 4th century AD, when it was likely erected around 370 AD under Emperor Valentinian I by soldiers to secure the Danube border. Its position on the Danube Limes allowed for control of the riverbank and access to the Kupfertal, through which a Roman track ran. Archaeological investigations, which began in 1970, confirmed the Roman origin of the masonry and led to a restoration and conservation of the site in 1985. The tower was used until the High Middle Ages.
