Roman Temple Tawern
The Roman Temple District Tawern is a collection of ancient temple buildings located on the Metzenberg near the present-day village of Tawern in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The sanctuary, surrounded by an irregular quadrangular district wall (46 × 36 m), originally comprised presumably five temples, whose fronts were aligned towards the valley. Over time, four ancillary buildings and two gate systems were erected. One of the temples was replaced by a temple built directly behind it (uphill), while three other temples had to make way for a larger temple with a three-sided ambulatory. In this larger temple stood a larger-than-life sculpture of the god Mercurius. Travelers on the important Roman road from Metz to Trier are said to have offered sacrifices to the god of trade, commerce, and traffic in the temple district. It is presumed that Christians destroyed the temple complex at the latest by the time of the prohibition of pagan cults in 392 AD.
Reconstruction+
On the site was a well over 15 meters deep. When the complex was excavated and partially reconstructed in 1986 and 1987 under the direction of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, architectural elements, coins, jugs, and sculptural representations were found in the well shaft, which, based on the stratification in the well, allowed for an excellent reconstruction of the history of the temple district. For example, a coin helped to determine that the well still existed at the end of the fourth century AD.

The site is accessible year-round, 24 hours a day. The temple district can be reached from the village of Tawern by following the signs to a parking lot that can accommodate about ten vehicles. From there, a forest road continues, which passes the temple district after about 800 meters.
