The Roman Vicus Ricciacus in Dalheim, Luxembourg, was once a significant Roman settlement and resting place. Today, its remains bear witness to its former grandeur and strategic importance along major trade routes.
History+
The origins of Vicus Ricciacus date back to 18/17 BC, when Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa founded the settlement on the site of an earlier Treverian habitation. Strategically located on the roads from Metz to Trier and from Lyon to Aachen, Ricciacus served as an important staging post. Around 70/71 AD, a comprehensive redesign took place, replacing wooden structures with stone buildings. In the 3rd century, the settlement covered an area of approximately 25 hectares and featured private houses, public buildings, an inn, several temples, baths, and a theater for up to 4,000 spectators. Germanic incursions led to destruction around 275 and again around 353/355, until the Vicus was finally abandoned around 407.
