Roman Watchtower Tössegg

After the abandonment of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes around 260 AD and the increased raids by the Alamanni, a new defense system along the Rhine, Danube, and Iller became necessary. From about 285 AD, numerous castella and watchtowers were erected to secure the imperial borders. This construction program is mainly attributed to Emperors Diocletian (284-305) and Constantine (306-337), who reinforced the Limes with robust fortifications. The late antique fortifications differed from earlier Roman camps; they were often smaller but strongly fortified and served for surveillance and deterrence. Emperor Valentinian I initiated another extensive fortification program around 370 AD, which included the construction of watchtowers like the one in Tössegg. The installations of the Danube-Iller-Rhine Limes helped the Roman Empire to assert itself against Germanic attacks in the 4th century. Even after the withdrawal of Roman troops in the early 5th century and the collapse of the Rhine border, some of these castella remained in use for decades.
