Roman Watchtower 10/22 (Mangelsbach)

The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, with a length of 550 km, from Eining near Regensburg to Rheinbrohl on the Rhine, is the largest archaeological monument in Germany and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Limes (Latin: border path/wall) refers to the border fortifications of the Roman Empire, which were erected towards the end of the 1st century AD.

This border was monitored by more than 900 towers, which were built in timber construction during the initial phase, starting around 80 AD. Stone towers followed, which were plastered from 150 AD onwards. Excavations have shown that the white plaster often had cracked joints, which were painted in terracotta. This created the impression of beautiful ashlar masonry.

This is the stone tower whose rising masonry was completely removed and, along with the building inscription, moved to Eulbach Park, where it was mistakenly declared a tombstone. The building inscription reads:

[PU]T(IENSIUM) IMP(ERATORE)
[A]NT(ONINO) IIII CO(N)S(ULE)

Translated: ("Erected by the) Numerus of the Brittones Triputienses, (when) Emperor Antoninus Pius was Consul for the fourth time." Accordingly, the tower would have been erected by a Numerus of the Brittones Triputienses in the year 145.

Originally, it was a tower with a square floor plan, whose side length was approximately 5.40 m to 5.45 m. The foundations were preserved on site, and the excavation site was provided with a small parking lot.
