Roman Watchtower 8/1

The square, 5 × 5 meter stone tower with its 70 meter thick walls, was partially excavated in the 1870s by Oberförster Hof and completely investigated in 1892 by Conrady. It turned out that the neatly executed masonry had only been preserved on the north and west sides. North of Wp 8/1, the Limes ditch and the palisade could also be identified.

In 1970, a new uncovering, graphic recording, and subsequent conservation took place. Conrady's information was partially confirmed. The northeast and southwest corners were completely destroyed, the remaining wall remnants were on average 0.30 meters high, and still 0.50 meters high in the south. The rising masonry, 0.75 to 0.80 meters wide, consisted of double-shell constructed shell limestone rubble stones with mortar residues. The wall shell ashlar blocks were quite uniform and small-format. The side length of the square structure was externally 5.20 × 5.20 meters. In the course of this conservation, four to five layers were built up over the original findings. The Limes ditch could not be archaeologically recorded in this area.
