The remains of the roman Watchtower can be visited

The Roman Watchtower Turret 48a is an integral part of Hadrian's Wall. It is located in Northumberland, near the village of Gilsland in England.

History+

This watchtower served as an observation post along Hadrian's Wall, monitoring the Roman frontier. As one of two turrets associated with the nearby Milecastle 48, it played a role in securing the empire against incursions. Excavations in 1923 revealed details about its structure, including the tower's dimensions and the height of the surviving walls. Evidence of craftsmanship, such as bronze and iron working, and several hearths were also found inside. In 1951/52, the site was cleared and partially rebuilt to preserve its remains.
