Roman Castle

The small fort of Burgsalach, also known as “Altes Schlösschen” (Old Little Castle), was constructed in the 3rd century AD as part of the Rhaetian Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was positioned approximately 1.3 km behind the Limes on a connecting road between the forts of Weißenburg and Pfünz. By 1790, the remains were well preserved, and altars dedicated to Emperor Septimius Severus were found. Initial excavations took place around 1800, but insights into the layout and walls, up to two meters high, only emerged from systematic investigations led by Friedrich Winkelmann in 1916 and 1917. After the excavations, the findings were reburied for protection.
