Roman Castle BOIODVRVM (Boiotro)

Boiotro fort was likely built under Emperor Valentinian I (364–375 AD) and was one of many short-term occupied fortifications of late antiquity. It possibly replaced an older fort that fell victim to the Alamannic invasions in the 3rd century. The garrison was responsible for protecting the river border, monitoring the Inn crossing, defending the city of Batavis, and maintaining communication along the Limes. Archaeological findings suggest that the fort was abandoned by its military garrison before 400 AD. In the late 5th century, Severinus of Noricum is said to have established a small monastery in the ruins, and a basilica for relics of John the Baptist was built nearby.
