The Roman fort of Bremenium once served to secure Roman transport routes in what is now Northumberland.

The construction of Bremenium fort is dated to 142 AD. It was established to monitor the Roman Dere Street, a connecting road that ran from York via Corbridge to Melrose. With dimensions of 148 by 136 meters, the complex covered an area of just over two hectares and was a stronghold in the Roman defense system.
