Roman Castle Castra Regina-Porta praetoria

The legionary fortress Castra Regina, whose name derives from the river Regen, was built in the late 2nd century AD in response to the Marcomannic Wars. A building inscription confirms its completion in 179 AD. It covered an area of approximately 24.5 hectares and featured the four gates, including the Porta Praetoria, which is still preserved today. Before its construction, a smaller military camp, Castra Kumpfmühl, existed, which was destroyed around 170 AD during a Marcomannic invasion. Castra Regina itself suffered multiple destructions, including by Germanic invasions around 278 and 288 AD, and by the Juthungi around 357 AD.
