Roman Fort Cilurnum

The remains of the roman Castle can be visited

The Roman Fort of Cilurnum, also known as Chesters, is one of the best-preserved Roman cavalry forts along Hadrian's Wall.

History+

The construction of Cilurnum Fort took place in 123 AD, shortly after the completion of Hadrian's Wall. Its location allowed for the guarding of a bridge over the River North Tyne, which was an important military route. Initially designed as a cavalry fort, it was used for retaliatory raids into the areas north of the Wall. Later, it was utilized by infantry units. Inscriptions confirm the stationing of various units, including the Ala Augusta and later the First Cohort of Dalmatians as well as the First Cohort of Vangiones.
