The Roman fort Comagena-West Gate in Tulln an der Donau is an impressive testament to Roman military architecture and a significant part of the Noric Limes. It marks the western access to a once strategically important cavalry fort that played a key role for centuries in controlling the Danube crossing and the Tullnerfeld region.
History+
The fort Comagena was constructed in the late 1st century, likely under Emperor Domitian, as a timber-and-earth camp. In the early 2nd century, it was expanded into a stone fort. During its long occupation until the end of the 5th century, it underwent several phases of reconstruction. From late antiquity onwards, Comagena served not only as a cavalry fort but also as a naval base for the Danube fleet and housed a cavalry unit. Archaeological findings also confirm the existence of at least two civilian settlements and three burial grounds in the vicinity of the fort.

The Roman fort Comagena-West Gate is located in Tulln an der Donau, in the district of Tulln in Lower Austria, Austria. It lies at an elevation of approximately 183 m above sea level and was strategically positioned between the mouths of the Große Tulln and Kleine Tulln rivers.
