The remains of the roman Fort can be visited

Condercum Roman Fort, a military outpost on Hadrian's Wall, is located in modern-day Benwell, a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne. It was the third fort along the wall in the Roman defensive line in northern Britannia.

History+

Condercum Fort was likely constructed between 122 and 124 AD by soldiers of Legio II Augusta. Later construction or repair work in the late 2nd century is attributed to Legio XX Valeria Victrix. It was designed as a cavalry fort and, in the 2nd century, housed the partially mounted Cohors I Vangionum Milliaria Equitata from Upper Germany.
