Roman Castle Favianis

The remains of the roman Castle can be visited

The Roman fort of Favianis, a significant ancient fortification, was an integral part of the Roman Danube Limes in Austria. Although largely covered by the old town of Mautern today, its outlines are still discernible in the street grid, testifying to its former military and strategic importance.

History+

Favianis fort, likely continuously occupied by Roman troops from the 1st to the 5th century, probably served initially as a cavalry camp and later as a base for the Danube fleet. In the 5th century, it gained particular importance through the activities of Severin of Noricum, protecting his monastery and serving in 488 as a rallying point for the evacuation of the Roman population of Ufernoricum to Italy after the Rugian kingdom was defeated by King Odoacer. Archaeological findings confirm the existence of the camp, whose name may derive from a personal name or a garrison unit stationed there.

Location+

The remains of Favianis fort are located in Mautern, in the district of Krems Land, Lower Austria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 194 m above sea level. It was strategically positioned at the eastern exit of the Wachau gorge, where the Danube flows into a wide basin.

On site+

Visitors today can explore the remains of the Roman fort of Favianis. Although large parts lie beneath the old town, some standing masonry is still preserved, particularly in the western section of the medieval fortifications and in the Margaretenkapelle.
