Roman Castle Freimühle

The discovery of the small fort in 1901 was by chance: a storm uprooted trees, revealing remains of walls. Under the direction of Paul Möhler, excavations began, uncovering Roman foundations. Major Heinrich Steimle identified the remains as a fort in 1902. As part of the Limes being designated a World Heritage Site in 2005, the location was geomagnetically and geoelectrically surveyed, the forest cleared, and the rampart made visible. The site was inaugurated in 2006, and an information pavilion opened in 2009. The 53 by 55-meter complex featured a 1.2-meter-wide wall and a six-meter-wide pointed ditch. An internal timber construction is presumed.
