In Köngen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is the Roman fort Grinario, an ancient military installation. It was once part of the Neckar-Odenwald Limes.

History+

The origins of Fort Grinario date back to approximately 85/90 AD, when it was presumably built under Domitian as a wood-and-earth camp. In early Hadrianic times, shortly after 120 AD, it was converted into a stone fort. A partially mounted cohort of about 500 men was stationed here. With the advance of the Limes around 159 AD, the camp was abandoned, and its garrison possibly moved to Lorch. After the troops withdrew, the fort area was used for civilian purposes and integrated into the surrounding vicus.
