Roman Fort Habitancum

The Roman Fort can be visited

The Roman fort of Habitancum is located in West Woodburn, Northumberland, England. This former Roman stronghold played a crucial role in securing the Dere Street, an important Roman thoroughfare.

The Roman garrison of Habitancum was built to protect the Dere Street, which led from York to Corbridge. Located on a low hill overlooking the River Rede, the fort measured approximately 140 by 120 meters and covered an area of over four hectares. It was surrounded by several ditches, still visible on the south and west sides, and featured a south and a west gate. Towards the end of the 2nd century, the fort was either abandoned or destroyed during the withdrawal of numerous Roman troops.
