Roman Castle Kapersburg (Rosbach)
The Roman fort of Kapersburg in Rosbach is one of the best-preserved Roman military installations on the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. It once served as a station for the Numerus Nidensium, an auxiliary troop recruited from the population of the nearby Vicus Nida. The complex is characterized by several construction and reconstruction phases.
History+
Kapersburg fort was probably built during the Trajanic period, from 98 AD, or around 130 AD. An earlier complex, the small fort of Ockstädter Wald, might have been a predecessor. The fort underwent several expansions and alterations, from a timber-and-earth fort to a stone wall complex. Around the mid-3rd century AD, the garrison was reduced, and the fort was partially dismantled. Finally, the complex was evacuated without a fight during the Limes Fall around the mid-3rd century, leaving no traces of violent destruction.
