The Roman Fort can be visited

On an elevation in the Lake District, specifically on the western slope of Hard Knott, lie the remains of the Roman fort Mediobogdum. This fortress, also known as Hardknott Roman Fort, gives insight into the military history of the empire.

History+

The construction of Mediobogdum fort took place during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, between 120 and 138 AD. It originally served to secure a Roman road connecting the port of Ravenglass with the fort near Ambleside via the Hardknott Pass. After an initial abandonment during the Roman expansion into Scotland, the site was reoccupied around 200 AD and continuously used until the end of the 4th century.
